Three Win Award for Locke Documentary at
Sacramento History Day, 2008

On Saturday, March 8, 2008 Doug Yee and Bob LaPerriere of this association judged the many entries in Sacramento History Day’s competition at American River College. They found the work of three young women worthy of this year’s award. They are Crystal Huynh, Hannah Dunn, and Lauren Fong.

Theirs is a documentary film about the history of the town of Locke in the Sacramento River Delta. They explore the origins of the town, the lives of the Chinese people who lived there, and the commemorative museum.  Our judges commented that the project was very well thought out and withstood penetrating questions from adult academics, historian, and judges.

The 2008 State Finals will take place May 8-11 in Sacramento. The theme of this event is “Conflict and Compromise in California History.” This topic is based upon the State’s California Educational Content Standards for History/Social Science. More information is available at www.crf-usa.org

The Sacramento Pioneer association was founded by pioneers in 1854 to preserve the history of the area for future generations. The membership today continues that purpose. Over the years the organization has been instrumental in preserving Sutterís Fort, valuable paintings, photographs, buildings, artifacts, and documents related to Sacramento. We preserve and maintain Pioneer Grove in the Sacramento City Cemetery and Pioneer Hall in downtown Sacramento. To inspire a new generation to explore the foundations of our community, the Association is pleased to offer a $1000 scholarship to a college-bound high school senior submitting an excellent essay on the history of the Sacramento area. Ultimately we shall publish a compilation of several yearsí outstanding essays for the community.
