Our New President :

After our March 27 annual meeting the gavel passed to Steve Huffman. He has been a Pioneer since 2004. That’s a short time by the standards of many of us, but his love of history goes way back. When he was in college and considering a major, he was torn between physics and history. He asked for advice from Ted Huffman, his cousin and a professor of biology at San Diego State. Ted’s advice was to go with physics, saying it’s difficult to learn physics except in a classroom, but one can study and enjoy history for a lifetime.

He took his cousin’s advice; he got his physics degree, and his love of history has never waned.

Following a business career at Blue Diamond Growers, he became the first executive director of the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation, a nonprofit devoted to making Old Sacramento a better place to learn Sacramento and California history. Steve retired from the foundation two years ago, but he is happy to report their programs continue with regular walking tours of the district and a summer history camp for school children. A particular thrill was organizing a talk by Jim Holliday, author of The Rush for Riches, and having a one-on-one lunch with him!

He especially loves to read about Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Renaissance subjects, and he has studied Gold Rush history extensively in recent years.

Steve is a native of Dayton, Ohio, the birthplace of aviation. His family built bicycles there and supplied parts to Orville and Wilbur Wright as they were building their first airplanes. The Wrights tested their machines on the Huffman Prairie near Dayton, owned by another relative.

He earned his physics degree from Williams College in 1962. A week after graduation he met Sally Fleury of Sacramento on a ship going to Europe, where he took a long bike trip with a classmate. Steve joined the Navy and just before steaming to Vietnam, he and Sally were married. Steve went on to get a master’s in economics from Claremont Graduate School. They moved to Sacramento in 1971 and still live in the Land Park house where they raised their four children. Steve says, “All four are married to terrific people, and now we have five grandchildren. Life is good!” He’s a long-time member of Sacramento Rotary, and he is active in the Episcopal Church. He continues to ride his bike about 200 miles a month.

Steve is looking forward to serving the Sacramento Pioneer Association as president and building on the momentum created by his predecessors, especially outgoing President Dick Frink. He knows our board well, having worked with them for four years and is enthusiastic about continuing on that team.
